Serial ATA is an evolutionary replacement for the Parallel ATA physical storage interface. Serial ATA is expected to eliminate the limitations of the current Parallel ATA interface. Because the Serial ATA architecture changes the physical interface layer only, it maintains register compatibility and software compatibility with Parallel ATA. No device driver changes are necessary and the Serial ATA architecture is transparent to the BIOS and the operating system.
